Or: Where can I get this Hero From?
Past HotM are available from a number of locations depending on their age.

As Grimble has been released for between 12 & 24 months, he can be summoned from both the Atlantis Portal (November 2020 & November 2021) and in the Tavern of Legends Portal.

He can also be “Trained” using the Hero Academy Level 10.

Atlantis Portal
Old HotM’s are featured in the Atlantis Portal a total of two times. Once in the month proceeding their Anniversary Month of initial Release (11 months after release) and again on the next Anniversary Month (23 months after release).

Tavern of Legends
HotM’s which are >12 months of age are added to the summons pool in the Tavern of Legends Portal.

Hero Academy Level 10 Retraining
HotM’s which are >12 months of age are also added as a possible outcome of Hero Academy Level 10 Retraining.

Or: How many summons are needed to get an old HotM?
Below Maths is current as of September 2020.
Subject to change as additional heroes are added to the Portal.

It’s important to remember that the Tavern of Legends Portal has the lowest odds for a specific hero of ANY portal… No amount of summoning will guarantee a Featured Hero.

You have a 0.25% chance of summoning a specific Featured Past HotM from the Tavern of Legends Portal (0.0125% for a specific Non-Featured).

On average, in a 10-pull, you have a 2.47% chance of summoning a particular Featured Past HotM (0.12% chance for a specific Non-Featured & 12.27% chance for ANY Past HotM).

But that statistic can lead our minds astray in exactly how our odds play out as we continue summoning.

Some useful insights:

(Each 30x Summons costs 8,000 gems or ~$79.99 USD).

# of Summons ~ USD Cost
pre-tax
Odds for Specific Featured Past HotM Odds for Non-Featured Past HotM
10 $26.00 2.47% 0.13%
30 $74.99 7.23% 0.03%
100 $250.98 22.14% 1.24%
500 $1,251.88 71.39% 6.06%
1,500 $3,749.63 97.66% 17.10%
5,000 $12,500.75 99.9996% 46.48%
10,000 $24,998.50 99.9999999986% 71.35%

Putting that in Perspective

If 100 people were to complete 100x summons, spending ~$250 USD:

  • 27 WON’T get ANY Past HotM
  • 78 WON’T get a specific Featured Past HotM
  • 99 WON’T get a specific Non-Featured Past HotM

If 100 people were to conduct 1500x summons, spending ~$3,750 USD:

  • 1 WON’T get ANY Past HotM
  • 23 WON’T get a specific Featured Past HotM
  • 83 WON’T geta a specific Non-Featured Past HotM

If 1 Million players each completed 10,000 summons, spending ~$25,000 USD:

  • 1 WON’T get ANY Past HotM
  • 1 WON’T get a specific Featured Past HotM
  • 286,500 WON’T geta a specific Non-Featured Past HotM

More Insights & Reading

I highly recommend reading these two threads for more information and context on summoning odds:

If you’ve read them a million times before, you may consider reading them again before deciding on your budget for summoning. A little time spent deciding on how much money you want to risk on summoning goes a long way to avoiding disappointment, frustration, and regret later.

@vanZille

QOH and Grimble were discussed here, it looks like the conclusion from the developers was that the taunt is still active until the end of special even after the minion is removed which is why Grimble doesn’t hit her allies.

Grimble not damaging QoH allies - #55 by nevarmaor

I wonder if Grimble will receive a new lease of life as minion destroyer, now that minion heroes are well and truly on the rise?

He’s useful even without emblems. I use him in raids/war when the opposing tank is Telluria plus another minion hero like Freya, Seshat, or Mother North

Oh! He is? Hell yeahs! He’s gonna be my next hero to level up so, thanks for this!

Of course he doesn’t hit hard so it’s more for his ability to kill minions and give mana to the other heroes in your team. You need to surround him correctly, but he’s tough with high def and HP

Yep, understandable, I think I’m okay attack power, but it’s the minion killing bit that I’ll certainly use the most with him, especially now that one type of war summons minions even.

Think he would pair well with Peter Kriss Tiburtus, giving serious consideration to leveling him once I get my sixth tabbard from Morlovia.

Oh, the Grimforest Event has just completed but Grimble is useful there as well, especially in that last stage with both Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots. Also against Queen of Hearts and Lady of the Lake in the other Events.
Basically you give him mana potions, and he’ll fill the rest of your team up

I have him maxed with 3 levels of emblems. He is not the best 5* hero, but I think he can be useful. I think right now with minions at war even more. He will also shine against Christmas Family. I don’t regret spending my tabards on him.

I’ve had him since the lucky HoTM draw… I leveled him to 3/70, but that’s where he’s stayed… His usefulness just isn’t that notable… plus, in Dark, I have Domitia, Quintus, and Zulag to work with… I just don’t see expanding him further…

Yep at times Tiburkiss should fire first (no/few minions) at other times Grimble first (medium/heavy minion presence)

Grimble often makes my C Quintus (and Quintus before him) average speed, as long as there are 2+ minions on the field. Plus he gives that crit+ which makes him a good candidate for mono purple v telly or similar

When I got Grimble as HOTM in December, I didn’t pay attention to him, as I was levelling other purple heroes.
After a long time I maxed him and I don’t have any regret. It’s true that his use is very limited, but he works pretty well with my mono team against teams with minions summoners.

With the advent of Rush Attack & Minion war rules, I’m wondering if Grimble’s stock has risen somewhat…

Can anyone report that he was particularly useful for war attack teams under either of those rules?

Imagine having Grimble & other attackers all with lvl. 11 mana troops in this situation for a Rush Attack war:

With 8 minions removed, wouldn’t ALL of my heroes, including him immediately be recharged from zero / low mana to full?

That seems pretty powerful to me, though still kinda niche…

Nope. Every destroyed minion gives 0.8 mana. So 8 will give 8 x 0.8 = 6.4 mana.

Mana speeds = required mana

Very fast 6.5
Fast 8
Average 10
Slow 12
Very slow 13.5

Ninja Charge 4.9 / 9.8 / 14.7

It would almost be enough to load a very fast hero … but it will complete the first charge of a ninja hero.

You will need to destroy 9 minions.

Grimbles effect is not affected by mana troops.

Ahh, that’s the piece I was missing. Thanks!
Still, if the heroes had any mana at all then, they would be pushed to “6.5” and be ready to rock.

Are you sure on this one? I was under the understanding that Mana troops affected ALL sources of mana generation…?

Now that you are asking I am not sure. Always considered this 0.8 to be a static bonus.

I tested Khagan + lvl 11 Mana troops + minor mana pots on an empty hero. Yes he loaded with just 3 pots instead of 4…so mana generation bonus even works on mana pots. This tends to be you are right and I am off.

@Cymro

So calculation for above 0.8 * 1.09 * 8 = 6.976 which would be enough to load all.
Keep an eye on your next war attack with Grimble (record it). If everybody loads with 8 killed minions or not…you got the answer.
