Ol’ Reliables #7 - Wu Kong

This little series was revived with Guardian Jackal discussion. Now it’s time for another episode!

Number “7” is usually associated with luck, so there is no better candidate for this episode than king of the gamblers himself, Wu Kong

Note: we are discussing current state of Wu Kong, regardless outdated [no family etc.] picture

Questions:

  1. Did you use Wu Kong? Do you still use this hero?
  2. Your memories with this hero, either fighting with and against (only no costume version)
  3. Potential vs. Consistency - Was Wu Kong ever worth taking in raids (both attack and defence POVs)
  4. How Wu Kong stand compared to newer 4* heroes?
  5. How Wu Kong stand compared to newer titan slayers?
  6. To sum question 3 and 4: Is Wu Kong still worth using?
  7. General opinion about Wu Kong.

Reliable!?!?!?!? I never liked him that much when my best two holy heroes were Wu Kong and Chao. I used him on my holy titan team until I replaced him with Bertulf. I knew others that used him on all teams. The tile misses could hurt, but mostly when you missed titan spot. But my biggest frustration was missing status effects. I’d sacrifice a lot on the optimal math solution to sacrifice those misses. It’s a huge mental health QOL benefit.

Costume Wu had his moment for being a strong hit all in Epic tournaments, but I haven’t seen a Wu in a long time.

Very interesting hero. I have really strong love/hate relationship with this one. Wu Kong has helped me a lot ranking high in events and titans in the past but at the cost of a lot of frustration until i achieved what was set as a goal. He could be real menace if his hits are in but also could be real pain to watch those misses.

I’ve never used him in PvP but have met him a few times in the past. Probably won most of them, can’t remember. I don’t think he is good for PvP but he could still make those slash attacks 1k+ dmg, which is insane. His special could be easily countered with proper timing.

On the other hand, Wu is decent PvE hero, especially if you have good combo heroes to pair him with (Hippo, Darkfeather and others that deal similar kind of dmg). Map stages, Quests and events are very easy to beat with such combo. And as stated, he could help boost titan scores a lot with the absense of better heroes than him (his special).

Today i don’t use him that much. Maybe only for MT last flags, when main teams are done. He is still very good tile booster. Occasionally i could pair him with Hippo on map stages for fun. That combo melts mobs

Was super excited to get him and use him for quite some time. Now he’s Wu Kobwebs

Can be devastating with Lemonwood and his “never miss”

VERY RELIABLE. Someone did the Math and it does match the card, the accuracy is around 35% which people hate a lot but forget the attack is at 185%, they never notice that. Obviously the stats for Miki and Tarlak plus the fact they don’t miss makes them better for titans. But remember many new to play players or free/cheap to play players won’t have the two but most likely have Wukong.
What is the strategy for titan hits with Wukong? Hit the defense down and elemental defense down heroes first, then Wukong, then the heavy damage dealers before the tiles. I did do a test run and realized Wukong makes the hits stronger plus the tiles that hit weak point successfully harder than the normal hits with attack ups of Boldtusks, Kirils etc.

In this titan hit, I combined Briennne’s staggered defense down with Wukong’s ability, Kingston, Lianna and Toon Caedmon were hitting up to 5,000 when successful, tiles were also hitting around 2,000-5,000. When I used Kiril instead, I got a score of roughly 25,000 (with great boards). With Wukong, my greatest hit got me 67,000. Keep in mind I have three ninjas at 5 and one mana troop at 11 (for Brienne because she should fire first).
For Sanctuary and Tower of Owls, Wukong enables people stuck on levels to kill enemies with very high defense. (My best 5* fully levelled with emblems failed to kill the owls on Normal level Floor 25, Wukong made it so that the tiles damaged them instensely. Also, Gargoyle effect of softskin is not beatable by skills, tiles become crucial in beating them. I have noticed minions tend to avoid missing targets (I don’t know if it is a glitch or because they inherit owners attack without considering Wukong miss).
In wars, Wukong should only be used if you don’t have a great roster or on your teams for cleaning. Taking Wukong to your best teams is a gamble (considering you don’t want to miss taking out people like Mother North or Guardian Hippo).
Wukong is still a popular hero in tournaments such as the 4* Buff Booster and Bloody Battle.
In conclusion, Wukong is a great hero who still holds his own against titans and is useful in many aspects of the games. That is why he is still important. If you are free to play or cheap to play, level atleast 2 copies and bring against titans.

I dusted him out and I am using him with Lemonwood.

He can’t miss, so basically Lemonwood is just taking this huge attack buff and annihilates the enemies. If you have more Elves, it gets even better.

He and grimsteel on rush can also devastate teams. 90% passive skill damage on normal terms doesn’t hit that much. But with Growth, and wukong’s gamble, it’ll annihilate teams with grim alone

  1. Did you use Wu Kong? Do you still use this hero?

Yes and yes. As F2P he is still my main titan buffer.

  1. Your memories with this hero, either fighting with and against (only no costume version)

Like everyone else, mostly love-hate relationships. Sometimes every shot is landing, sometimes he is missing 4 times out of 3 tiles. A hero that makes you afraid to use your other heroes.

  1. Potential vs. Consistency - Was Wu Kong ever worth taking in raids (both attack and defence POVs)

Back in my low level days sometimes I’ve fought teams with blind monkey on defence, and yeah, it was usually “Wu Kong in defence = attacker is winning”.
As for offence, he might be useful against teams we are struggling against, but with only 3 chances to fight certain team I have no guts to use him in raiding.

  1. How Wu Kong stand compared to newer 4* heroes?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think there is any new hero that have similar effect? Wu is occupying certain rare niche and is the king of it.

  1. How Wu Kong stand compared to newer titan slayers?

Other “titan slayers”, while can be weaker, usually are more consistence. People were switching 4* Wu for 3* Bertulf - this might paint a picture about Wu’s situation.

  1. To sum question 3 and 4: Is Wu Kong still worth using?

If you are sure your team can handle miss or too, or you don’t have other “titan slayers” - sure. Otherwise - he is too easly replacable.

  1. General opinion about Wu Kong.

One of the E&P legends. Everyone’s first “titan oriented hero”, everyone tried him and either stayed or threw him into the trash. If I had to sum up Wu Kong in one word, it would be “polarizing.”

  • Did you use Wu Kong? Do you still use this hero?
I did, I no longer do.
Was delighted when I “finally” summoned him and he immediately jazzed up my titan scores

  • Your memories with this hero, either fighting with and against (only no costume version)
Wu Kong immediately boosted my titan scores, more than doubling them. He remained my main titan weapon until other boosters joined my team.
He was also excellent in late war flags to try the truly gambling throw of the dice when using the dregs of my shallow bench. Sometimes amazing one hit kills, other spectacular failures as specials failed to hit and tiles missed.

  • Potential vs. Consistency - Was Wu Kong ever worth taking in raids (both attack and defence POVs)
Never worth putting on defense, a liability that I LOVED to see on the other team.
He was worth brining on raids when trying to break a much stronger team. He did not increase the odds of winning but could help you win big with an underpowered team.

  • How Wu Kong stand compared to newer 4* heroes?
Considering that I no longer use him my actions indicate that I believe other options improve my odds of winning more than Wu Kong does. A Franz that always increases damage the enemy takes and blocks buffs has more impact than Wu’s boosted damage with the 35% chance to miss.

  • How Wu Kong stand compared to newer titan slayers?
If a player does not have another booster, Wu still makes sense. He fills a niche, does it well enough. I prefer C Gazelle plus Franz, Shar’kai etc more that Wu Kong for titans because my scores are consistently higher.

  • To sum question 3 and 4: Is Wu Kong still worth using?
This depends entirely on which other options a player has in their roster

  • General opinion about Wu Kong.
Fun and frustrating. Very useful, has a niche and the name of the special REALLY is indicative of what he does for you
I will try him with Elves but since I only have one 5 Elf maxed the rest of my team would suffer so I expect it to be “:poop: + Giggles” more than a strategy (don’t have any other "can’t miss heroes) so perhaps Lemonwood, Wu Kong + 3 Healers is the way to go (Darkfeather, the extra hits can’t miss), would also make sense with Hippo but I don’t have her*

Used him religiously for basically all Titans until I got an alternative in each color. Currently that role is filled by
Yellow: Ranivir
Dark: Shar’Kai
Red: Hammerclang
Green: Tarlak
Blue: Not really filled, Jott is as close as it gets in Blue

I just got his toon costume maxed, so he’ll probably come out against Hades.
