So, just made a 10 pull in the mixed event with Avalon, Pirates, Guardians and Wonderland. Got a bunch of 4*, 8 to be precise (No idea how). I’ve now got 3 Merlins and 2 Hansels. Wondering what to do in a situation like this. If this helps, here is my hero roster.

I’m not that familiar with Merlin (he’s eluded me for two portals) but Hansel is excellent!
For myself, I keep one duplicate of every hero I feel I would level for 4s. For a 3 I will level soon I might keep more than that to help me max their skill if it doesn’t happen while leveling. The rest I use to level my current project. Others will keep more than that, I saw on the G. Jackal thread that people were ascending three or four of them. Depending on how often you summon you may want to hang on to all of them to level if you run out of projects.

Merlin does less damage (bosses do like 100 to a random enemy), but completely drains their mana; Hansel and Gretel do more damage, but only ding the mana a bit. For this challenge event, I wish I had two of him. Hansel and Gretel don’t shut the mana down enough!
I think the answer to the original question depends a lot on roster space. I personaly only keep dupes of 4* if I know I’m going to level them (Like Proteus, Boldtusk, Kiril and Wilbur).

There aren‘t lot of 4 Star Heroes I would keep a second version of. The only one I have double is Rigard with costume. You will receive tons of other 4 Star heroes in the other portals or in your Training Camp.
So don’t matter to eat up your doubles, you will need the space.
you got s lot of good heroes… repeating heroes (dupes) will be useful later on in wars or the tower events. or indeed, sometimes even in places where there are double/triple bosses. I would definitely keep 2x Merlin and 2x Hansel, and for now maybe the 3rd Merlin too
at some point, your roster will grow enough that you need to buy more roster space.

Hansel is pretty good for sure, would be useful in future Challenge Festival events for sure.
Dupe 4* healers are very useful too, as 5* healers can be hard to come by. I remember having to run teams without healers in wars, and it wasn’t fun AT ALL. 
Dupe 3* can be crucial for tourneys and competing in challenge events if it’s your thing.

So yeah, not getting rid of crucial heroes’ dupes would be my advice.
On the other hand, if you have 13 Priscas, you can feed away all of them.

A great choice of portal to summon from as a new player - congratulations on your new heroes 
I would level up Hansel (And keep his duplicate, he´s magnificient) - as well as level up one copy of each of the other heroes you have in time - they will all be useful. (Just raise one Merlin to max, and see if you are lucky to get a different Dark Hero in the future)
I´d do Guardian Jackal, Merlin, Captain of Diamonds/Kiril, Hansel, Phoenicus first.
