I opened this thread after I’ve noticed there are so many players in diamond arena, still thinking of Ares being a good tank. This misinformation could also be caused by Google:
Though is amazing hero, Ares is exclusively an offensive hero, being useful in any type of combat (missions, PvP and titans). As tank, doesn’t affect the attacker in any way. Actually, being so passive, the attacker has plenty of time to charge own specials. If the attacker brings 1-2 dispellers within own line-up, only a very bad board could interfere between the attacker and a really easy victory.
The thread is addressing especially to diamond players. Because any other of their options for the tank, would be a better one. Also, this may be helpful for decisions regarding the paladin emblems.
To demonstrate how bad is Ares as tank, I chose a team 3900+. Only 2 legendaries.
I also run a 3-2 line-up; a mono team wouldn’t prove anything. Any tank is destroyed eventually, if the player has the tiles with mono.
I recorded the whole process; viewers may see every single combat is won at first attempt. I spent over 700k food in the process. This is encouraging. This proves only few players are still using Ares as tank. I only skipped about 100 rerolls in the middle of the video.
Note: @ApollosEmpire, you may figure out now, what happened to your defense at the current tournament Still, I guess may be used at buff booster tournaments. @lambeau, I also tagged you, because you had your doubts about Ares as tank.
I can kill 4000+ Guin tank team with regular 3-2
4* heroes so thats mean she is bad tank?
I see your point, Ares is bad tank beacuse he is totally passive but if he have on strong hero like Ursena/Isarnia/Lianna/Joon they usually killing your hero/team with Ares buffs.
To be fair, he’s not a bad tank, just outdated for the current meta.
Back when Ares first came out, he was one of the best tanks in the game. I think Domitia was the only 5* dispeller, and at the time she only dispelled the target, so Sonya was the best Ares counter. Thus, he was rated highly in Anchor’s guide as a tank, and word spread of how good of a tank Ares was.
Now, there are many counters for Ares, and he just pales in comparison to better tanks that came out later. But I’m guessing the “Ares is a great tank” mantra never really died away as his actual effectiveness did.
I think you need to try with less good boards to make your point.
All your raids began with at least one good combo ready to go, mostly blue and one purple.
Or go rainbow.
A bad tank is one that gives you enough time to recover from an average to bad board, and I did not see that in your video.
Not that I’m saying he is a great tank, I do think that Ursena, Kunchen, (do I have to mention Guin?), and even the new Aegir have made him less desireable in the upper ranknings, however I think he is still diamond material.
Not to rain on any parades but I question the fact that the viedo proves anything. These wins all had good boards and I don’t think that a different tank would have served them any better.
I don’t disagree that ares is not a great tank. I just think that this video should be taken with a grain of salt. The quality of a tank is defined by how well they can punish a bad board . If a team is well selected a good board should always remove them as a threat ( as demonstrated in the video, Ares never really got the chance to do anything because either the tiles were good enough to kill him before he fired, or prevent him from firing with proteus or the tiles were good enough to dispel quickly afterwards ).
I think that scarecrow is right about ares. I don’t like him as a tank in the current meta because he is passive and easily dispelled. I would feel confident piling off color tiles in to him and wouldn’t worry if he fired as long as I get the tiles eventually but he is better than the video suggests. If you don’t get the right tiles he will be more of an issue, just not nearly as big an issue as other tank options.
To the OP. I was interested in your opinion you being a legendary player with a lot of valued opinion pieces on the forum.I would like to ask advice as a c2p participant.
You have obviously been number 1 globally a number of times. How many for reference?
Who do you consider the best current tank and why?
What is your advice to c2p player, we don’t have the great roster you have.
Any advice, thoughts and anecdotes greatly appreciated

@Scarecrow- thanks so much for the vid dude! I’m not sure everyone understands exactly what the point of your video is. - I DO!
You’re a good egg to go the extra step to help people out the way you do.
Many thanks and best regards to you and yours for a HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Kunchen gives me fits 75% of the time too… I ran Aegir at tank for a long time and yeah he’s a great guy! RN im doing pretty well with Ariel +11 at tank with Alby +9 rw marj+11 LF RF- Leo( 4 now) sesh +10 RW. I typically hold between 2550-2600 cups .
Desperately LOOKING for a better? Holy for my def but Leo is doing well enough
Glad someone opened this topic. I never felt Ares is strong on defense and I wondered why he’s loved by so many guides. Now, with the context it makes sense he used to be good before season 2 madness and new hotms. He’ outshined by many, and countered quite easily.
I can’t remember a time when Ares gave me hard time. He’s just niche titan specialist now.
