Ol’ Reliables #13 - Proteus

In episode 12 we discussed about Frida. And people from forum game knows what comes after 12 - number associated with bad luck, 13. But today’s hero isn’t unlucky, unless you are his victim of course. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s talk about Proteus.

Note: we are discussing current state of Proteus, picture might be outdated.

  1. Did you use Proteus? Do you still use this hero?
  2. Your memories with this hero, either fighting with and against.
  3. How Proteus stand compared to newer 4* heroes?
  4. How Proteus stand compared to other mana control heroes?
  5. Is Proteus still worth using?
  6. When to use his base form and when costume?
  7. Is Wizard good class for Proteus? If not, which one would be better?
  8. How do you like visual design of this hero?
  9. General opinion about Proteus.

Ah, Proteus!

  1. Was a mainstay when i raided in platinum arena, and for the end-of-season boss fights of seasons 1-3. Haven’t used Proteus in approximately 2 years.

  2. Cursing the Grazul tanks that shut down my whole Hel and Proteus strategy; scrambling around looking only for purple tiles to keep the Big Bad Final bosses shut down.

  3. The special is still useful, though newer heroes would have longer durations, and two or three passives.

  4. Affecting three, imo, made Proteus better than Hansel and Merlin, more reliable on average than Waddles (though with good rng Waddles can wreck an entire team), less rng dependent than Dawn, easier to use than Littlejohn, easier to comprehend than C2 Chao, bettered only by the season of love heroes who mindless heal targets (which I don’t think’s available at 4*, so I’m comparing epics with legendaries).

  5. In diamond arena against 2025 stats considering the hero’s low base defence? Not for me. Lower down / in the elemental / tavern quests, or on certain world maps? Yes. In a full Atlantis team to get the family bonus to defence, equipped with a 5* troop? Maybe.

  6. The only time i’d choose the costume over the base is for treasure quests. Base form’s mana stop = n/a. Costume form’s mana slow = yes, though Mist does that quicker, better, and with more bells and whistles.

  7. depends if you like min/maxing a hero, or building them well-rounded. A reviving fighter / paladin that can negate damage / druid to provide a minion shield, would mitigate the low base defence. But sorcerer on the base form would give the one-two punch of ultimate mana control. Wizard helps if you care about the dot and emblem for the attack stat, though I never saw Proteus as a damage dealer, so… it’s meh?

  8. Excellent.

  9. A hall of fame hero, pound for pound one of the most useful heroes in the game until toons / glass / umpteen kinds of immunity passives existed.

Ah, this guy is the very definition of Ol’ Reliable!

  1. Yes & Yes. Epic challenge events is where he shines for me to this very day and 4* Rush tournaments too
  2. Memories of him are fond and recent. With him on my team, that mana stop is so priceless and the DoT is a nice bonus too. Costume bonus makes him a little less squishy but keep him alive and he’ll do a job for you. Fighting against him is straight forward really but you’ve got to prepare for him. Goldie, Kitty and toon heroes make him a little less worrisome but he still cannot be ignored if you see him on the opposing team.
  3. Stats aside, he is still a top epic hero for me. A must in those challenge events in my opinion. Right up there with just about any other 4* purple you can think of
  4. Lets see. His only real competition is Hansel, Gretal, Merlin and Waddles. Maybe Little John too. I prefer him to all of those but also enjoy using him in conjuction with some of them too
  5. Yes! Big yes!
  6. Always use his base form! His costume is there just for the bonus. Base form is far superior in my opinion
  7. Wizard is a very good class for him but I think sorcerer would’ve been good for his base as well. That would make him a mana nightmare.
  8. Love it. Probably the best looking S2 hero
  9. As I said at the start, this guy is the very definition of ol’ reliable in the 4* realm. His stats may be a little outdated, even with the cotume bonus, but his utility is still top notch. First name on my team sheet for Epic events. Considered for 4* tournament battles where its not a team of toons/glass heroes. I sing his praises long and loud

Just one gamer’s opinion

Game Well :sunglasses: :mechanical_arm: :guardsman:

He only joined my team a few weeks ago so he’s still unleveled. Only faced him in PvE, so he’s really a blank for me. Sad, his special seems interesting :person_shrugging:

This guy must be top 3 of any such list
I don´t think there was a bigger game-changer early in the game. With this guy I went from finishing nothing (PvE) to finishing everything instantly.

  1. Yes, used him for everything, these days non-toon 4star heroes aren´t PvP worthy anymore (well not even toons are really, but still). And in 4 star tourneys toons are so prevalent making his status effects pointless and for PvE these days I use 5 star heroes and autofight out of laziness. So no, I don´t use him anymore. But any new player should really go out of their way to try and grab one of them!
  2. See above
  3. He´s fine as long as you don´t have to fight toons.
  4. Better than most
  5. See above
  6. Costume is garbage. Never use it!
  7. Wizard is the worst class possible for him as he deals no damage. Anything that helps survivability would have been better. Clerik, Monk, Paladin, Druid, Fighter, Rogue, even a silly Sorc would have been better…
  8. Back in those days Artwork still was quality done by actual artists, not some AI garbage as they do these days.
  9. Awesome!

I have planed to do him since the very beginning, but I wanted to stabilize formula first

Is that parenting vernacular and you have recently become a parent? In that case congrats!

Love it.
I consider 13 my lucky number and Proteus was an absolute favorite hero, as @Gargon said

Prior to the masses of immunities, Proteus. Shut. Things. Down.
The lack of upfront damage was actually helpful at times because of the ripostes that were common

  • Did you use Proteus? Do you still use this hero?
Still have four maxed, used him universally for a very long time.
I do not use him any longer, would need to do some limit breaking for it to work.

  • Your memories with this hero, either fighting with and against.
Fighting against him was a terror early days when my heroes were not strong because he would shut you down and the poison DoT would corrode my team. That phase passed fairly quickly as he left defenses due to his fragile stats
Proteus led my team full of 4star heroes to many wins over top level 5 star defenses, used him in Legendary level in Events and final stages of Quests. He allowed me to finish my first Ascension materials quest and get a 4 star AM, it was a very big deal for me, a milestone

  • How Proteus stand compared to newer 4* heroes?
His special remains tremendous but the stats and immunities/reflects mean I have not used him in years. The Toon and now Glass costumes have made ailment casters difficult to use. Proteus’ stats were fragile when he was released, these days … ufff.

  • How Proteus stand compared to other mana control heroes?
Versus other 4 star mana controllers his special remains one of the most powerful. BUT. It needs to land/stick. Heroes like Vonreine with better stats, softskin passive that steal mana, or Chao’s costumes with better stats that also steal mana seem to bring more to the table these days because they survive better

  • Is Proteus still worth using?
There should be a use case. If able to LB2 he should be fine.

  • When to use his base form and when costume?
Prefer the base for mana shutdown since I have a hard time making mana steal work if it is my main strategy. It works as a bonus on top of damage or great passives

  • Is Wizard good class for Proteus? If not, which one would be better?
Works fine. Fighter is always good for the Rez and last gasp firing of the special. Monk and Cleric help with their resistance to ailments

  • How do you like visual design of this hero?
    Always liked it. Looks menacing

  • General opinion about Proteus.
Strong feelings of nostalgia for a hero that “Made my team” when joining for the first time. He enabled my team to punch FAR above its weight. I have two of the costumes maxed, refuse to eat the other two and simply allow him to float on my bench growing barnacles. That makes me sad but I invariably find other heroes in my roster that are better for getting a “W” in PvP situations or completion in maps and quests
