Just got a tabard from Mystic Vision! So can work on maxing my first purple (and 2nd overall) 5-star hero!
Have mats for Onatel. Waiting for mats are:
Red: Hypnos, Alucard, or Oceanus
Blue: Skadi or C Alasie
Green: Kingston (or Grace)

I chose dark lord. In my opinion I think he’s the best choice. Fast, very very strong hit, high attack stat, mana gen ailment and the poison is over 200 per turn.
The others are good. Freya would be my second choice. I’m assuming the teams you fight in war aren’t crazy strong. So freya could be a good tank but without other minion summoners, you miss out on part of her skill. Viscaro is too slow and I’m not a fan of peppermint. Although the argument could be made to level her simply because she is the newest hero you have. But I stand by dark lord. I used him forever and the only reason I don’t bring him out more is because I have so many great heroes now that honestly I sometimes forget I have him.
As for red Hypnos or Alucard is a very difficult choice. You will need both, but I’m going to be honest. I’m in a mid to lower tier alliance, I don’t see many minions in war. Hypnos may be the best choice. He does hit all as well and has the potential for much more damage than Alucard.
In blue I say c alasie no doubt. Although her mana drop is much less now, she’s still great. Any hero that effects mana give/take/buff is a great hero. Honestly skadi can’t really deal with the new minions out now anyway.

I’m leaning towards Dark Lord as well. I initially thought he was a weak Season 1 hero. Then I read about him, realized he wasn’t, and discovered his double buff, and became super excited.
How is he on defense? I tend to do well on offense, but need to improve my defense. I definitely gravitate to big hitters!

Freya for Defense. IMO
Dark Lord is good on offense but dies fairly easily on Defense, IMO.

Synergy is important. So to best answer that, lets take a look together at what you have to choose from to group them with.
Yeah, post up your defense team and your other heroes. It will be easier to help you that way. But ultimately freya is better on defense. She gives minions, 30% defense and she cuts mana when she dies.
Defensively she’s great and yes, better then DL. But DL, although his defense is low, can cause problems when facing him on defense as well. He ultimately is an offensive hero, but can be serviceable on defense. The mana gen ailment can be brutal. Same with the poison if you can’t cleanse it quickly. My card is doing about 220 poison per turn with maxed magic troops.
Is your alliance going with purple tanks? If yes, then I vote Peppermint. Freya is an option (faster speed and more defense orientation), but simply because of her much weaker stats I would vote the newer hero with better stats and direct damage. Maybe choose based on which emblem you have more of?
If you do not use purple tanks, I would vote dark Lord, he makes a good wing on defense and is a very strong sniper on offense.
Red (by far your best color): Alucard: It´s nice to have a hero that makes you win against any minion defense you encounter. And even if they don´t have minions you still have a crazy fast hard hitting hero on offense as well as a good hero for wing/Flank on def. Hypnos is of course great as well, but I think less interesting for defense while equally good for offense (with a different specialty). Even Oceanus is amazing and can be used in various settings, even though his best environment are titans.
Blue: CAlasie, Skadi is a nice second pick when you get there, but no competition for Alasie.
Green: Grace
