I found an interesting article online from a player who suggested to level your troops over your heroes and I am interested what other players do/think. Also, I only have 1 level 4 troop and am wondering if level 3 troops are worth leveling.

YES.
Levelling up troops will give you different bonuses (attack, def, health, mana, crit chance…) so it is worth to level them up.

Yes, higher lvl troops are the key!
Keep a set and try to max all of lvl2, lvl3, lvl 4 and legendary troops when you get them.
They will save you now and later on.
Wars, raids, tournaments, events, seasons.
It goes on and on

Ah, I did not realize I also needed to level 2* troops?. The article I read suggested that your troops level is more important than leveling your heroes. I have had my focus on leveling my heroes. I did level some troops a bit but it costs a lot of food so it is either leveling heroes or leveling troops. I am just wondering how people do both.

It depends on which part of the game you are concentrating on. For the map stages and raiding, you would use 4* and 5* troops as they give the highest stat boost.
At the early stage, it won’t be easy to get 4* troops, so level up your 3* troops. I would recommend not levelling all your troops, just the ones that you use for your map team. Finishing the maps will give you the resources and summon coins.
But there are events in the game where there are limitation to what troops you can use. For Challenge Events, for example, you can only use 1* and 2* troops for Rare level, and 2*/3* troops for Epic. Similarly for 3* and 4* tournaments. These events are optional, but the rewards from participating and completing will help toward getting and levelling up your heroes.

Well, I have been leveling my buildings and heroes. Right now I am level 26 with troops at level 5 one of each colour. I have 1 level 4 troop that I also leveled a bit. Atm I made my own alliance as I can’t find an alliance that suits me. I realize that sets me back a bit regarding materials but I am fine with that. So just to be clear, I should not level 2* troops?
At your level that shouldn’t be a priority unless you want to do well in Challenge Events and 3* Tournaments. Just keep a few at level 1 instead of feeding them to your 3* troops.

If you decide to play the game for a few years you will be glad you kept a set at each level for the different aspects of the game.

Troops are important and can give an edge. I’d limit leveling 2&3* troops to about level 5 or so early on to save feeders for 4/5* troops. I don’t feel lower troops help as much and it is really hard to get more feeders. Hero Academy can get troops but takes a while.
Keep one 3* to level and save the rest 3* troops to feed 4* after they hit level 20. I found 5* easier to level now.
You’ll want five 4* mana each color for mono Titan attacks.
I’d also save all Epic Troop Tokens for magic tower as those are awesome for mana boost.

I have noticed that it also depends on how you play the game. People have different strategies and play differently. If you play a lot of raid competitions 2 Star troops will be very important. So it matters what you do to really answer that question. I have 2* of each color and 3* but I take out my 3* when I replace it with 4* and 5*.

max troops of each color and each tier. I have two maxed 2stars and 3stars of each color and often wish I had a third. Working on getting a set of 5 stars and 2 maxed 4 stars of each color. Once I finish that, I’ll work on a third and maybe even a fourth 2star and 3 star. After that, it’s all about 5 stars for different classes. By then, the rules on 5stars will likely have been changed.

I do raid, not because I like it but I get to know heroes better that way but I would not say it is important to me to raid or not. It can’t hurt to level some 2* up though, especially for certain events.

The first video is as I said old…but more importantly it’s understandable. I actually think Matthew quit playing even before I found his video originally when I was at level 40 in the game. Personally I liked it because it explained which troops to me did what and why I should level them over another in terms I understood. Which wasn’t that easy for me in the beginning of the game.
