đŸ§Ș Early information on the October 2020 HOTM (Zulag)

This thread is to provide early insights and discussion on the October 2020 HOTM, Zulag.

All Information from Beta is Subject to Change!

Don’t get attached

Details from beta, especially brand-new beta content, don’t tend to be very reliable for actual hero release.

It’s incredibly common that heroes are changed during beta testing, or sometimes even after testing but before release. That is, after all, the purpose of beta testing.

So I wouldn’t get too attached to any of this — it’s not unheard of for entire portions of skills to be removed or reworked, or for radical changes to stats to be made.

Zulag Beta Info & Stats (Extremely Likely to Change)

  • The caster and nearby allies get +46% defense for 4 turns.

Or: How many summons are needed to get a HOTM?

Special thanks to @Garanwyn for assistance on summoning odds and proofreading for this section.

It’s important to remember that HOTM have very low summoning odds. No amount of summoning will guarantee a HOTM.

On average, in a 10-pull, you have a 12.3% chance of summoning the HOTM.

But that statistic can lead our minds astray in exactly how our odds play out as we continue summoning.

Some useful insights:

  • 73 times out of 100, you’ll get a HOTM by pull 100
  • 95 times out of 100, you’ll get a HOTM by pull 229
  • 99 times out of 100, you’ll get a HOTM by pull 352

Putting that in Perspective

  • 27 out of every 100 people won’t get the HOTM by the 100th pull

  • If 1 Million players each summoned 100 times, 270,000 of those players wouldn’t get the HOTM

  • 5 out of every 100 people won’t get the HOTM by the 229th pull

  • If 1 Million players each summoned 229 times, 50,000 of those players wouldn’t get the HOTM

More Insights & Reading

I highly recommend reading these two threads for more information and context on summoning odds:

If you’ve read them a million times before, you may consider reading them again before deciding on your budget for summoning. A little time spent deciding on how much money you want to risk on summoning goes a long way to avoiding disappointment, frustration, and regret later.

Quick thought: a defensive Ares?
Role: Seems like a purple tank based on self and nearby heal/defense specials, paladin class, and stats
Innate ability: good timing right after Sand Empire, but I’m not sure it’s that prevelant of a concern
Elemental link: 5% minion isn’t much. I might say this is the worst link (for a purple hero). With Seshat, Freya, and Bera (upcoming) why would you ever want to give another minion to your purple heroes? Seems like you’re more likely to hit the 3 minion limit than actually get use.
My bias: I hate self and nearby heroes. They make tanks, but I find them harder to incorporate otherwise (yes they can be used, but it’s just harder).
Relative strength: She’s definitely not “more” powerful than Kunchen and Ursena.

Do I want Zulag: I can always use more 5 stars and 5 star healers. I’m f2p so I’ll take him. I’m not super excited though. My initial thought is a B. I’d rather have Kunchen, Ursena, Seshat, Clarissa, or even Khionna at first glance. Who has paladin emblems to use?

May be a good flanker to a yellow tank. But Zulag is competing with Clarissa for emblems, not to mention Telluria.

I like this one. I wouldn’t be using it in my main squad, partly because of the paladin emblem competition, but it has my confidence. Nice addition to the HotM line

I will never say no to a healer but given I already have Rigard I would probably pass the opportunity to pull for him.

But he does have a lot of great defensive buffs as bonus so I may reconsider

Thing is if I want to pull for Halloween I would rather pull in November because I am short on blues

Same! (Wait, Halloween stretches into November? Hmm, options
) But boy, have I got emblem problems

The 5* heroes in my main squad are Telluria, Jean-François, and Clarissa. Two paladins and a wizard. These three months offer:

A paladin
A wizard
Reuben, who’s gonna need some fixing and likely still won’t beat JF

I like the October & November ones. And I plan all my summons around monthlies, because for some reason, I always get the monthlies I want and I never get any of the other 5* I want. It’s not a problem; I’m a long-term planner, and that luck’s not shabby. These are some very shiny round pegs for my square, rectangular, and hexagonal holes. Luck of the draw, I guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I may need to consider Season 3 summons several months down the road, though
 These are getting REALLY shiny

I have already made a decision not to spend any Valhalla coins from now on lol

Must save up for later

Meh

It’s hard to justify space on a team for partial team healers. He’d have to be a tank but is easily dispellable, and Malosi laughs in his face

5* Melendor costume that only buffs three. Pass.

^^^Good point. I forgot it wasn’t the whole squad there

If it was the whole team instead of just 3, this would’ve been close to the 5* Kiril we’re looking for albeit in a different color. As it stands though, another swing and a miss - pass for me.

(and what’s up with this trend of annoyingly dumb innate resistances? First it was Raff’s atk debuff, now sand damage, really? Are Gafar, Jabbar, Rana, and Yunan running rampant?)

I think CRigard is slightly better, heals 609 ALL

useless in offense.

Only possible option is the tank position and a tank that does nothing more than regenerating a bit and pushes defense is so 2018 and not 2021

My initial inclination is to be pretty underwhelmed. Maybe it’s difficult for me to theorize how impactful the two plus defense buffs are, but the HoT is meh - I’d rather use one of my many Rigards.

Also, this is one of the heroes who strikes out on Innate Resistance (like a low attack hero being immune to attack debuffs). If you’re facing Sand heroes it’s a small benefit to not take the Sand DoT. But then your HoT is compromised.

Of course, they will be great in buff booster tournaments, obviously.

Brynhild looks better than her

Is it another Aeron? :roll_eyes::roll_eyes::roll_eyes:
With only earby allies buff, C.Rigard will outclassed him for sure.

20 disappointments for me.A useless tank with tanky stats, and a defense oriented offensive hero. Looks to me like a bad purple copy of Guin, about two years too late.

Resists sand damage, but has healing
So does he counter Roc and Rana or not?

The answer is no. He only stands there and takes hits.

Gonna pass on him since his only use is defense and even there he’s rather meh.
He is a meatshield easily countered by dispel. Only positive thing is that yellow does’t have a lot of those.
He would need at least some damage to be useful in defense or Heal/buff for the whole team to be considered for offense.

People who pulled Malosi will laugh at this HOTM (including me) :joy:

Seems like a reasonable start but at the very least the HoT has to cover all not just nearby.
