Okay I am just doing the talent grid for Athena, i’m following the sword path and I was wondering whether to include the mana node or not?

Gives further opportunities, with a mana troop, your hero will benefit much more than if you chose some (little) extra def.
MANA node 
Will you use her on defense? If not, then it only matters whether that mana node helps you hit a mana break point. So the quesiton is more about what troops you have to use and whether that 2% helps.

If using mana / magic / Cyclone troop not necessary.
If using Legends Troop then this mana node is a essential pick.
Exactly. The mana node is only useful if it helps the particular hero a troop is assigned to to require fewer tiles to charge.
I’m currently trying to work through similar issues regarding Calculating troops needed for mana speed milestones, and choosing troops to level and could also do with some help.

She picks up 10% mana between both the HOTM and costume bonuses. That and she seems to benefit from the extra shield. I run her with either mana,styx or 5* wizard troop.
I feel like the mana node is about future-proofing. People who didnt select mana nodes previously have had to reconsider their choices since Legendary troops.
The alternative option (defence) is unlikely to be game changing. A break point now or in future might be.
