i saw this thread the day it was posted and have been thinking about the question ever since. my reasons for playing have changed drastically from when i started, from when i was three months in, six months in, and now that i’m about a year and a half in, i didn’t have an immediate answer when i first saw the question.
the alliance angle is definitely one. back when i was building the base, i found that fun just a matter of resource management (even if the building times got ridiculous post SH20). i find the resource management fun, especially since i’ve now paused leveling heroes to save food for troop leveling. (i don’t think anyone finds troop leveling fun, but using the newly built-up troops will be fun.)
i had a moment of clarity last night when this happened:
i had garbage tournament hits (2-3) yesterday going 3-2 (i’m normally a mono player) and getting shafted by being one tile off (on fast heroes) from charging specials and by being inundated with absurd cascades into enemies you don’t want going off, even after trying to play the board carefully. this trend continued in raiding, and at one point, i was 6-12 doing all sorts of different things with my raiding teams and getting squat results. it was one of those things where, yes, i know the boards are random, etc. etc. etc., but when you’re in the middle of a horrible run of RNG, it’s the kind of thing that fuels you to believe that conspiracy.
i went back to my normal mono raiding later in the night and rage-flasked my way to global 3 and my new PB in cups. that’s when the moment of clarity hit me: yes, i do have goals in the game outside of results, but i also am just a hypercompetitive gamer by nature. i dared the game, “go ahead, keep screwing me on RNG, let’s see how long you can keep it up” until i finally started winning and went on a run.
yes, it sounds unhealthy to be hypercompetitive in a game where you’re guaranteed to lose at least some of the time, but then the game RNG DOES reverse course and gives you a 5-0 tournament Friday where you go mono and 4-1 and just obliterate enemies with tile damage because the boards are THAT good.
TL;DR: i’m very competitive, and this just happens to be a thing i like trying to win at.
