I guess the game needs someone new besides the Dark Lord to tell players to save their progress.

Well, the dark lord serves other purposes again. The change happened in beta and live game when villains event came out.

Correct, during the time when LoV was active, and the summoning portal pop up shows up featuring the Lord holding that book of containing the naughty bits as the featured Hero/Villain almost had me wondered each time if my account is synched correctly.
