A few people have mentioned connection issues recently related to proxies. This one in particular sounds like your same error message, just triggered during a different activity:
One member of my alliance couldn’t play the Trial of Strength for the life of her, receiving this message

She assures that she’s not playing through a proxy, she tried common things like restarting phone, restarting game and changing connection, but nothing worked. Anything else works, quests, AW, chat, titan and so on.
On the lower right corner of the screen you can see her game account if that can help.

One other mention that sound similar, just as an FYI for devs:
It seems to be some iOS or Android conflict with WiFi proxy, I always get this message that it may be a proxy issue. But simply nothing has changed in my connection since it worked just fine 2 days ago. And as no new update was released something is going on, and wrongly.
This is the only app showing this problem.
