Hi, guys, I have both of them. Elena is 2/60 and Sumitomo is 3/60. Have materials to ascend only one of them and as a f2p, will use it universally, but mostly for Titans. Don’t have enough AMs to max Elena. Which one is better. My other red are Boldtusk maxed with talents, 2x Scarlet and Gormek: all 3/60,
You should max one of the 4* heroes because maxed 4* are better than 5* heroes at 3-70.
Sumitomo is good on defence (but you already have Boldtusk for that) and in raids. On the other hand, Scarlett is great for titans and events.
Do you have Grimm or Tiburtus maxed? If you don’t, you should max Gormek.
In my opinion, Scarlett would be the best one for you now, but the choice depends on your roster and whether you are focused on titans or on raids.
agreed, ascend Gormek. He’s better than Elena at 3/70. I really feel like Sumitomo is junk. His counterattack is only useful in tank position on defense and you already have BT to give fighter emblems to. Keep Elena around for wars and maybe bring her up once you have the rings ready to go or a surplus of blades.

I would ascend Gormek first too, since you lack Wilbur. Defense decreases are really important to have, as they make otherwise tough bosses and enemies, much more manageable to take down. Combined with Boldtusk’s attack buff, you’ll really note a difference for tough quests, titan damage, raids, and map levels.
Sumitomo is decent, but a decent hero in a color that is filled with a lot of amazing heroes means that he’s getting bottom priority. 
I would only ascend Elena once you have a stronger bench of red heroes, and once you have the mystic rings for her. Unless you pull Marjana or get lucky with a Hero of the Month, then I’d use the rings for one of them. Elena has her strength in fighting green titans thanks to her very high attack stat and the counter-attack buff.

I also agree that you should go with either Gormek or Scarlett. There is a case for both. I hardly see Sumitomo anymore fighting in Diamond raids but I know I never feared him. He is like a red 4* version of Obakan. I also don’t fear Obakan in raids. I have him but he sits at 1.1.
I also have The other heros you mention, Scarlett, Gormek, Elena. Scarlett is great though a bit squishy she hits very hard and if you give her emblems she can be great with her evade. I used her with emblems until I maxed Domitia and then reset Scarlett and gave Domitia the emblems. But I still use Scarlett esp on titan teams. Gormek is a strange one for me as I fed him ALL red and he never changed his skill. Only time is went up was at each ascension. He went into 4.1 at 4/8. I finally started feeding anything to him and got him to 8/8 at 4.50, not a joke. Usually I feed rainbow anyhow but decided to baby him, guess he didn’t like it, LOL.
Elena I have and got with Khagan. She is used in diamond and if she fires it can be quite a paid since she hits pretty hard to all and also has that counter. If you don’t have Melendor or another dispeller with you it can get ugly. But without the rings, she is way to soft for use at 3.70. She is easily a ring contender unless you get Marjana or another great red.
The def down really helps you like others said. It lasts for 6 turns and like the other 2 ram-puls Grimm and Tibs, they are indespensible. As a F2P you won’t regret having Gormek max. Same with Scarlett. Also, I personally like Kelile and I know you don’t have her but she is fast like Scarlett and though she does a little less from tiles, she does have the burn that gives DoT and can be a real help. She also is a bit sturdier than Scarlett as well. Many times I take her instead of Scarlett in the raid tournament just for that reason, esp the no healers where that DoT is deadly.

I’m focused on Titans, Scarlet is too squishy even maxed. Have Tibirtus maxed.
I like using the counterattack and that is one of the reasons to be between Elena and Sumomito. The other was that when faced Elena in the raids, she is a very good, but also slow mana. For 8* -9* Titans, I thought I need a 5* hero. But you changed my mind and I’m thinking to max Gormek, have 277 emblems for him for all the reasons you mentioned. If max Scarlet, will have 199 emblems for her.
To me Titan is more important than Raid, it’s quite easy to play around Platinum with decent 4 stars. Having better Titan score will help yourself and your alliance, better loot in the long term so definitely I will go for Gormek for his def down
