Forum likes mean you found the post, or reply, worth reading and discussing ( see notes )
Summarize button
Topic Summaries: The feature where Discourse summarizes long topics is heavily influenced by how much each post is liked
I love the summarize button.
This also works with the summarize filter:
Filter by user
Step 3: hit the “X posts in this topic” and it will filter those posts by that user.
If you want to read before, or after, a filtered post, you can look up the actual post number
In the above example it is
@zephyr1
9/9 post in the topic. But by clicking the link button, it displays the actual post is#128
.This allows you to go to post
#128
and then scroll up or down.You can also hit refresh page on your web browser, but sometimes that will move you to a random post further up the topic.
So if you are using the summarize filter, clicking the link button will tell you the actual post number.
Most times refresh page will also work, but sometimes not.

[Primer] What do forum “Likes” do? Or use your “Likes”
==New User==
(Discourse New User Tips and Tricks)
To let someone know that you enjoyed and appreciated their post, use the like button. Share the love!
==Highlights==
(What are "Likes"? - users - Discourse Meta)
Likes are central to how Discourse works. So central in fact that there’s no “on/off” button for them because Discourse is not designed to run without likes enabled.
Signaling
Topic Summaries: The feature where Discourse summarizes long topics is heavily influenced by how much each post is liked. Without that signal the content will be less useful to users who are looking for “the gist” of the topic.
Top Topics: Likes are used in the calculation of the “Top Topics” filter as a way to allow users to find high quality topics on the forum.
Edit 2019-Jan-28:This is cool
If you click the “Summarize Topic” button, the first reply is always the “Solution”:

==Downvotes==
Why no downvotes?
Systems of fact, data, and science can benefit from downvotes, because statements can be scientifically proven to a reasonable degree. Systems of opinion do not benefit from downvotes and are in fact materially and seriously harmed by them, because nobody can prove an opinion. Empathy is the order of the day in opinion systems. ==Color of the Reply count==
(Color difference indication - #2 by mikechristopher - support - Discourse Meta)
If you hover over it - it will explain it - its to do with the high like to post ratio. The more likes the posts get it considers it to be a useful topic
==Miscellaneous==
Interesting posts that came up in the searches:
==Votes and Likes==
(Show both like and vote button on topics - #2 by Johani - feature - Discourse Meta)
The like button - and like count - are only removed from topics in categories where you have voting enabled. Topics in categories where you don’t have voting enabled are not affected.
If you’d still like to show the like button and count in topics in categories that have voting enabled then try to add the following to your theme. . .
Sigh
I wish Discourse.org handled forum links within hidden/ spoiler text better
Until then, I will just have to quote the whole post/ reply
