Why is it that after every update I can no longer see when my players were last active (or their teams) until they update too?
Is this really necessary?

It says in the picture. You have different version of the app, that is why you can’t see their data. It is different.
For example imagine a situation where you could see data between different game versions, when the team power update came. It would mean that even if you had two identical teams, your team powers would be different. And that is the safest example, you can imagine how bad could it get if different game versions would share data between them.
