One of my alliance fellows is F2P and started Empires at the beginning. He just got his first 5* Hero from his legendary training. Getting training camp 20 built and unlocked is something I made a priority.
Since 5* Heroes need the same ascension items as two 4* Heroes, I am leveling up all my 5* Heroes to 2.60 and then stopping, until I have three 4* Heroes of every color. Not only does that give my team more flexibility, you need different heroes for farming, rare quests, titans, raiding, war and challenge events.
But you can dramatically increase your damage by attacking a single boss with two heroes of a strong color and removing your weak color hero. Example: my green 4* healer is weak against red titans and bosses, I can swap in a blue 4* hero ( strong against red ) and my damage increases because I removed a hero doing half damage, and added a hero that does double damage.
If I don’t have a good blue 4* hero, I will use a maxed out blue 3* hero with a high attack stat. The 3* will die quickly, but will still give the increased tile damage from a second blue hero ( strong against a red titan or boss )
For challenge events it helps to remove the reflected color, and the weak color, for single bosses, and have three heroes of the strong color.
If you cannot get ascension items, raise your 4* heroes to 3.60 and your 3* heroes to 3.50, they will still help you out a lot if you can swap in and out the right colors and special skills.

If you are fighting a titan with a rainbow 4* hero team, you can increase your shield/ matching/ tile damage by replacing a weak color 4* hero, or a neutral color hero, with a strong color 3* hero.

Because of Epic tokens, elite training, legendary training, event summons and elemental summons, many players have more 3* heroes than they can level with 1* or 2* heroes from loot and training camps.

You actually lose 90% of the XP of a hero that is used to level another hero.
I often recommend spending gems to buy 15 roster slots ( 5 slot purchase x3 ) so you can keep extra 3* heroes to level up when your current hero team is max. Always keep at least one of each 4* & 5* heroes is good too. As Rook says, the Devs are always rebalancing under used and over used heroes.

There are many play styles. My wife spends her resources as soon as she gets them. I like to experiment with game mechanics. So I keep a hoard of food and recruits. Example: I just spent 2.58 million food ,from my hoard of 7.75 million food, to experiment with the barracks.

So choosing to level the best heroes you have, and stop leveling poor heroes when they are a bad investment ( see sunk cost fallacy ) can help you a lot. However, hero roster slots are inexpensive, don’t get rid of heroes you have invested a lot of XP and ascension items.

Just wanted to give a shout-out to Gryphonknight for his/her awesome work and great informational posts. Granted, some of the info is a bit over my head but if I slow down and re-read it, I usually get the gist. Second, if you can rephrase the parts you don’t understand, and add it as a reply, it will be a HUGE help to other forum members also trying to master the same game mechanics. My posts carry language and cultural assumptions I can never 100% remove.
First of all, you’re welcome…your posts are a great help for strategizing and figuring this game out. I have been sharing both your findings and recommendations with my alliance and it helps them too. As far as what I said about some of the information being difficult to digest, I believe the problem is not on your end. I am going to take a wild guess and say you probably work in a scientific field e.g. engineer, mathematician, physicist, etc. Your posts are a model of scientific consistency, but a little hard to follow at times (some of the math, etc ). As I said before, I don’t think the problem is on your end. its not your fault if im a bit of a dummy and need to go slow to make sure I’m comprehending things correctly…I hope I’ve explained myself well enough. I’m playing from 7 month… I have 2 training camps at level 20… it’s normal that I have done 80 herpes and I’ve got only 3 stars??? I spend 70/100 € every month and I do multiple elementaly calls (2600 gems everytime) and here only 3 dove stars herpes in 7 month… if the game give me nothing I will spend nothing more!!!

The game is pnly a game - it goves nothing.
I have been a spender. My first few 10x were 50% 4*. I have pulled Rigard and Justice on single pulls and had Nayalya as a bonus HOTM once.
Now my 10x pulls in elemental summons have been almost all 3*, and every hero a dupe.
Luck changes - the game does not.
I was wondering if anyone had any info of the eligible 5* heroes that can be had via Legendary Training? I’ve been fortunate enough to have gotten four 5* heroes via Legendary Training . One was a double, but all have slow mana builds. I much prefer Legendary Training over epic or elemental summoning. I’ve only received 3* heroes when summoning in my last 37 attempts. Quite terrible especially compared to my luck with Legendary Training.
If you go to the epic summon gate, you can scroll through the examples of potential summons and view their stats and special skills. With the exception of any event heroes (right now, the sand heroes), all the heroes available in this list are also available through a level 20 training camp.

Thanks for the tip! My poor luck using Epic Summons continues as I just received another 3*! I’m not really sure why I bother. Kind of like playing the Lottery and always losing.
