This error actually has been reported several times recently independently of using a VPN, so it may be unrelated (ignore the thread title, the cases where this occurred are much broader):
One member of my alliance couldn’t play the Trial of Strength for the life of her, receiving this message

She assures that she’s not playing through a proxy, she tried common things like restarting phone, restarting game and changing connection, but nothing worked. Anything else works, quests, AW, chat, titan and so on.
On the lower right corner of the screen you can see her game account if that can help.

Every time I click on the summon gate it says "connection error, there was an error communicating with the asset server. This can be caused by using a proxy. Please check your network settings or try different network " . I have tried with another networks, (2-3 networks), and it’s the same. This is happening for the last two days. I don’t have another problem, i play all the time, this is happening just when i click on summon gate.

I usually play from wifi connection and the game works no problem. Sometimes I play from US T-Mobile Data connection. For the past month or two, I almost always get this message when on the T-Mobile connection:
“There was an error communicating with the asset server. This can be caused by using a proxy”.
Phone OS: Android 8.0.0
Last time this happened was 7/16/2018 at about 9:15pm MDT (GMT-6)
