Does anyone know if retraining a 4 * epic troop only changes the color or if it also converts the troop type from crit to mana?

It is random. It can convert to any colour and type (except for the one you put in).

From my personal experience, your troop can be retrained into most likely a different color, but it’s possible to retrain into the same color just different type.
