The penultimate moderator interview will be from the dedicated and decidedly feline @rook

Which means, @zephyr1, that your deadline is creeping closer!

  • how long have you been playing? :hourglass_flowing_sand:

Based on my “purchase history,” I downloaded the app on December 20, 2017. I like rpg, puzzles, and fantasy. This caught my attention but I put off downloading as I didn’t want another game having recently stopped playing one and I didn’t want to get into another. But I thought “this looks simple and fun; just a puzzle game.” :joy::rofl::joy::rofl:

  • what’s your current role in your alliance? :bar_chart:

I’m currently co-leader, resident jackass, and have become the data person. The data one I think I accidentally volunteered into. I was getting frustrated with slow/non progression and decided to do something about it with other leaders. Funny as I don’t actually enjoy the data aspect too much but I like helping others, and if this helps others progress, I don’t mind it. We don’t have strict requirements but have found that the data has helped people get a better understanding of exactly how strong we are and if there is room for individual improvement. Can you tell I’m a little competitive . I’ve gotten help from a particular forum user recently who shall remain nameless (unless they want credit).

  • which hero are you currently levelling and how will you use them? :muscle:

I currently don’t have a “must have” so I’m leveling by color. Red is Elena who I’ve wanted to ascend for a while and kept getting skipped - she’s like 4.65 and I like her in a red stack and against titans. Purple is Sartana who is one of the last s1 heroes I needed - she’s almost 3.70 and will be another strong hero in wars. Green is Kadilen - she’s about to be ascended. I haven’t collected Lianna or Evelyn or Telluria so I’ve been sitting on greens. I got my 18th tonic and decided I needed to raise one I have. Yellow is Mist - think she’ll help with my 4* tournament play. Blue is Mireweave because why not? - she’s new and almost 4.70 and then will switch to one I just recently got - Isarnia costume.

  • Which is your favourite hero in your roster, and why?

I love Onatel. I used her in beta and wasn’t wowed. She was adjusted but I didn’t play with her again. Then I got her and wasn’t too excited. I was wrong - she is a beast. I once was down Onatel to 5 and was able to win that raid! First and only time (wish I recorded it). She cleared the tank. Slowed the left and hit the right. Slowed the right and hit the left. Little hp gain with the link. She can turn the tide better than any of my other heroes.

  • What’s your favourite source for E&P play advice? :game_die:

The forum. Duh. I am a moderator here you know. :stuck_out_tongue:

  • Do you have a particular memory of a great victory, a tragic defeat or a moment of madness? :exploding_head:

You know, not really. I noted the Onatel one above. We’ve had some close wars where we cheered together but don’t remember specifics. I do though remember the sand empire in 2018. That was the first event I was able to complete and it wasn’t expected. I’ve completed all since then, but this was the first. My goal was modest - advanced 15. But I did it and kept going. I wore that avatar proudly.

  • Which Season 1 hero would you most recommend to a new player? :man_student:

Hmm. Well, as a new player, I was ftp so I learned to play with who I got. I did not get a healer til very late and relied upon those minor mana potions. There are heroes I wanted but got too late and haven’t used much. So I’ll answer this as to which s1 heroes still get regular use. Those would be Rigard, Boldtusk, Magni, Vivica, Joon, and Isarnia. These are the power houses. I wouldn’t expect a new player to focus on those 5*s though - I didn’t get them til much much later. I’d also add Kiril as well to that list. There are more that are good but lose favor as you progress. These are the ones that still get used.

Oh yeah. Then there’s Wu. I still use him but wish I didn’t have too. :joy::rofl::joy::rofl: Alas, he is my titan specialist for now (and maybe for ever with my budget but oh well).

  • What can you see out of your window right now? :telescope:

Nothing. It’s midnight so it’s dark. But my backyard ends at a county ditch with a big old field behind it. One day it will be developed, but not any time soon (my house was just built in 2017 and they’re still finishing off the neighborhood). On the other side of the field, but over a mile away, is I-35. In the winter, I can see it a little but it’s completely covered when the leaves grow back. There is an Gander Mountain with an annoying flag above the trees and a harness track that just built a hotel on the other side of I-35, but they’re not too much of an eye sore.

  • What’s something you enjoy about being a forum moderator? :policeman:

People come to the forum for help. I enjoy helping point people in the right direction. It’s a privilege knowing that this is an international community and little old me is amongst the few invited to represent SGG as a moderator on this forum.

I also enjoy playing games with the community and will share some rl stories. I believe it helps make us be more real people and not just characters. Because it is the people that truly keep us here.

  • If the rest of the moderator team were stranded on a desert island for a week, what roles would they take on to survive?

Hasn’t this already been answered?

  • If you could make two changes to the forum , one realistic and one less so, what would they be? :crystal_ball:

Unrealistic first - automatic filtering of flaming posts. Oh I do not like the heated arguments and accusations. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten into one here. I’ll give an opposing view, but would like to think I don’t bash or attack. And I listen to the other person and sometimes find my opinion changing when a well placed argument is made. I’m not perfect and have looked back at posts in the past as being harsh, but really don’t get why certain things are beat to death. Maybe a limit in number of posts in a thread, sort of like number of likes in a day (that may be realistic). Why can’t we all just get along?

Realistic - I’d like to see more titles assigned. I mean, we only have one official active content creator and our game specialists are not particularly active right now. There are other content creators and game specialists that I think should get some credit.

Now that I reread this list, they both seem pretty realistic, so I feel I have failed. I need unrealistic - I know - something that automatically changes a 20 to a zero. Shoot, I don’t know. Guess I’m not a big dreamer.

  • If I gave you $1000 to spend frivolously , what would you buy? :moneybag:

Well, I’m building a basement now so that sounds like some money for drywall or plumbing or a vanity. I’m not ready for flooring yet but it could go there. Yeah, I’m lame. I don’t currently have any pictures on my phone but can post some later if people really want to see timber framing.

For more fun, my wife and I enjoy going on cruises or similar trips. We just cancelled our family vacation to California this summer so could use something to do, not sure a cruise is the best idea right now though. She’s from Wisconsin so we’re looking for ideas there as her family owns property along Green Bay (the water hits their backyard). We’re thinking outdoor activities is the way to go, but she just had knee surgery so we don’t want to push it. So… we’re still thinking of ideas.

  • this is a really strange and challenging time for all of us across the whole player base and all our communities around the world. How has your alliance been supporting each other or those around them? :handshake:

We’ve got a mix bag. Our leader works in a medical field where he is working on respirators amongst other things. We have other nurses and first responders. One particular person told me how they’ve seen this up close and “it’s not pretty.“ From this person, that’s saying something.

In our alliance chat, people are dealing with it with humor. Not all would probably appreciate the humor, and conversations do get serious on occasion, but in general we’ve been trying to keep things light.

Ah yes, I remember that feeling

excellent read. Superb. :ok_hand: :facepunch: :raised_hand: :ok_hand:t2: :ok_hand:t2: :ok_hand:t2:

Great read!

Elena - I’ve just ascended her, she’s 4/35 now but I’m already bringing her on raid offense and Titans. She is fuuuuuuuuuuun.

I found this really funny for some reason. Like, how horrible must that flag be to be annoying?

Kudos for being so low-key, humble and altruistic with the whole helping people thing. Thanks

Here’s a picture of the flag. Am I unpatriotic to think there has to be some ordinance on how big or high these things can be?

Keep in mind that’s from the bedroom window which is essentially the third floor as I have a full walkout basement.

ah. if anything, you’re even MORE patriotic for not wanting the flag to be covered by the trees…!

Great learning about you LKAF! Sorry you are missing California, it’s gorgeous right now with little smog! We had to cancel a cruise as well, we lucked out and went on a cruise out of New Orleans right before the COVID stuff blew up. Thanks for being a moderator, I know it’s super challenging right now.

We’ll make it to CA. That’s where I’m from - UC Davis grad and masters at CSU Sacramento. Grew up in east bay and parents are still there. This was partially a visit and partially a vacation, if you know what I mean.

So “cancelled” is not the best term. More so postponed. But it likely won’t be winter as the kids want to go white water rafting.

Excellent. My wife is from NoCal and we travel to see her family and friends in Sacramento, San Jose and a few tiny cities. Being a Socal boy, it’s nice having someone who knows all the cool things to do up there. Postpone is a much better word…less final.

Thanks for sharing @littleKAF.

I’ve enjoyed using Mireweave especially with Kiril, Frida and Grimm, and I hope you do too once you finish getting her leveled.

That’s actually a wonderful idea. I hope it gets implemented soon.

Sorry to hear about your California vacation, hope you’ll be able to visit soon.

@littleKAF I am curious about the type of data you collect to help with alliance progression. Do you feel like it’s helpful, and are your alliance members receptive to reccomendations based on your data.

I agree… that flag looks annoying, partly I think because you are only seeing part of it. But then Aussies aren’t into flags as much as USA

Sure. I’ll hit these in two separate posts.

The one I’ve been doing the longest is war data. Another player created a Line not that reads screen shots and allows you to access pre-formatted data through a third party website. It’s nice and easy. From there, you can copy the information into a spreadsheet. I’ve blanked other player names (as don’t know if they want me to share) but left my own.

I’m really not sure where that spreadsheet came from. Either another member made it or obtained it. She’s not with us anymore so I’m not quite sure. (Miss you @Alyssaann1014).

Some alliances track per tank color and per war mechanic. I don’t do that. I like the simple one. People like it to see how they’re doing. It allows people to judge if an experiment seems to be working or not. Of course, you can’t see the other side of the hit so it’s only so good, but allows for self-evaluation. Like I said, other alliances do more, but this is about what I’m willing to do.

Here’s how I read my performance. My offense did pretty good. I actually went for the higher tiered heroes as I have some bench to do it, and did well. My defense though is another story. I think I was avoided as my TP is high but my tank is not ideal for green. So I got one shot both times. I hope tough that I took two strong teams to do it. I’m stronger other tank colors.

LOL “Guy who dies first”. A worthy goal for anyone stranded on a desert island. Or facing the zombie apocalypse.

Titan data I’ve only been collecting recently. And I’ll admit, it’s a bit tedious. We have been taking screen shots of our defeated titans and the log for a while. Now, I take the log and use an ocr in Discord to turn it into a text file. From there, I have to format in such a way that it can go into a spreadsheet. I think this takes 10-15 minutes but haven’t timed myself yet.

At this point, you need to know how many hits each player made. This is very tedious and takes me like 30 minutes per titan. Mostly as I do other things simultaneously, but it’s also mind numbing. One ex-alliance mate helped with the counting. Another one recently helped me (thanks @A.A.ron). He told me it took him 20 minutes per titan. So there is quite a commitment with titan data.

Oh yeah. Since the log doesn’t show all 22 hour of hits, we have a Line group (called data monkeys) who take screen shots throughout the day. Please @Petri help us get a different method.

The spreadsheet though is sweet. It tracks total score, total hits, average hit, and average hit per color. Here are some samples for (1) total score, (2) average hit, and (3) average hit for purple. I’ve blacked out names but highlighted about where I fall.

I have seen this help. Note, it’s all been self-improvement - we don’t use this to push people or kick them out. Some members didn’t realize how low they were compared to others and decided to improve. That’s the main area. For example, in March, I had the lowest average hit for red titans. I did improve but there’s still room. I noticed this time my blue titans was low, and that’s expected as I’m missing some green hitters.

A big thing though is people saw that we could kill a 13* or even a 14*. We used to have people slack immediately with 13*. I wanted to show people what we were capable with on average. This has helped.

Lastly, I made this little spreadsheet. I :poop: you not, people were wanting to skip titans when we were on track to kill them!!! I don’t like skipping titans - all should die (I did say I’m competitive, no?). The problem is the progression bar can be misleading. And people also didn’t realize what our average hp loss per hour was. This has helped a lot. We could see where we are at and decide as needed. Here’s an example that I just did on our current 12* (we should be killing 13* so we’re well ahead of this one).

I made this spreadsheet and wouldn’t mind sharing if someone hits me on Line, but it’s really not that hard to create. It’s simple and clear which is what I like.

Mine as well  Love her since I got her. And back in the time when I didn’t color stack she helped me to win so often. I remember many fights where only my Aegir and Onatel were left alive but 3 and a few even 4 of the enemies… but that dreamteam just made it. And I Iove her artwork, my favourite of all heroes in my roster, maybe even in the game.

Great interview and thank you also for sharing so much information about the data collect. I might be i interested in all of the spreadsheets… But yet uncertain if my alliance would appreciate it or if they would feel to much pressure by that. I am in a bit of a dilemma there: I really like me alliance, and though we became a bit more competetive our credo is still “Having fun is most important and RL comes first”. And a few of us really don’t care so much about improvement, data and theory I think and I don’t wanna push them too hard…

It’s a tightrope for sure

on the other hand many people appreciate my input. We are changing tank color for the upcoming war and my ally-mates were specificalls asking me for advice on how to set up their defense. I am thinking of just maybe collect some data and share more general information with them, just to show that with a little bit of adjustment we could beat higher titans - without pointing at certain members.
