This thread is to provide early insights and discussion on the initial release of the Round 1 of Beowulf Heroes.

Don’t get too attached

Details from Beta, especially brand-new Beta content, don’t tend to be very reliable for actual release.

It’s incredibly common that features are changed during Beta testing, or sometimes even after testing but before release. That is, after all, the purpose of Beta testing.

So I wouldn’t get too attached to any of this — it’s not unheard of for entire portions of features to be removed or reworked, or for radical changes to functionality to be made.

:tophat: Beowulf Heroes

There are a total of two (2) new heroes added to Beta for testing; these have been indicated to be for Black Friday Summon.

*The names of the new heroes are: Hrothgar, Wealhtheow

These heroes will be available in the Black Friday portal in 2024.

I’m excited about this, some more heroes from the British Isles!

Hrothgar and Wealhtheow were King and Queen of the Danes.
Even Beowulf came from what is now Sweden.

There is an ambiguity with the Status Effect Generator.
Which effect cannot be dispelled, the effect generator itself, or the generated effect?

Mr Chekov would probably tell you “It’s an old Russian story”.

Yes I always remember that black slime monster but can’t remember the names of the characters.

What’s this thread all about?

And who upset @Pr0spero?

Only black slime monster that comes to mind is Armus who killed Tasha Yar, but that was TNG. Chekov was original crew with Kirk, Spock and Dr McCoy.

Wonder if there’s still copyright on those originals - would make a great set of Heroes

What’s up with @Pr0spero?

Something about deals and staff not replying to questions

Not sure what’s up with @Pr0spero

A consistent irritation I have with this game is the lack of attention to theme/flavour. It sometimes feels like they just assign names and art to cards randomly without any consideration for what makes sense or would be thematically interesting.

Why do goblins cast growth/wither and summon mega minions? What does that have to do with the “character” of goblins in any fantasy media?

Why do fox heroes reduce healing as a passive and cast permanent effects? What does that have to do with foxes? Why do Owls cast a damage baed effect? Slime heroes feel like the only family in the game with a strong thematic effect (I guess “elves never miss” is thematic too)

Why does Perseus’ special skill not have anything to do with speed? Why is Ares (god of war) a defensive hero? Why is Cleopatra a healers? Etc etc.

I guess this is continuing here. What does “permanent status boost” and “dispel an effect” have to do with Beowulf? They might as well have just called it the Penguin family.

Would’ve gotten me to spend that way :penguin:  :sunglasses:

Well, this depends on the specfic goblin but alot of fantasy lore surrounding goblins do support a magical and mischevious nature for them making the ability to alter the capability of allies or foes well within the sphere of goblin abilities. Larger fantasy creatures are also known to protect goblins (Trolls in the LotR series comes to mind here) so a protective good sized minion is also understandble in most fantasy goblin lore.

Again, we would need to look to the fantasy realm. Where foxes do appear within mythology they tend to be trickster type magical creatures. Permanant effects and a passive which restricts healing should fall into the realm of trickerster magic

Baed effects?? Not sure wat you mean by this but have you noticed that all owls do extra damage against yellow/holy heroes? Otherwise “light” heroes which have a “sun” symbol? Noctornal characters who hate the light is an interesting spin which would match an owl well

Because Perseus has nothing to do with speed. He’s the Demi-god son of Zeus (Or Poseidon if we’re talking Percy Jackson). Why should his special have a speed aspect attached to it?

The best form of attack can be defence. I don’t think a God of War would be silly enough to be purely attack orientated. Many wars were lost thanks to reckless attacks and won thanks to sturdy defence…

Well, I’m pretty sure she wasn’t really a fighter. Cleopatra was known to do what she could to keep Egypt in the best health she could and did send grain to an area of egypt suffering famine shortly after ascending the throne so a healer would kind of fit in with that

Nothing I guess except for they’ve started doing that with many characters and seen that it is an attractive addition to the playerbase so people will chase them much like they did with Goblins. So the answer as to why, here, is likely money. Though, an argument could be made that the actions of Beowulf were kind of permanent and dispelled issues from kingdoms.

Good heroes but I was expecting much more OP cards lol.

Good effort but I think most of those links are quite tenuous (“foxes are magical so they should have magical effects”). A better link for owls would have been that moonlight strike scales drastically based on the targets defence, and owls are known for bullying tiny creatures.

But yeah, despite your impressive efforts, it is still weak flavour. There is a board game I play (with a great computer version) called Through The Ages which is basically “Civilization with cards” and its an absolute masterpiece of game design. There are about 50 historical figures in the game (ranging from Aristotle to Bill Gates) and the effort that the creator spent on giving them gameplay mechanics which line up with their real world persona is truly impressive.

(Perseus = speed comes from his most famous story being the one with winged sandals, but on reflection you are correct that I’m wrong with this one).

Yeah, they’re reaching at best. I just enjoyed the challenge of thinking up possible reasons.

I do agree with @Math-Teacher though
