Does the element defence buff only active in pvp Defence Team

Not sure I totally understand your question. Normal slash attacks are not affected by element. But other buffs and effects apply.

Slash damage is not affected by the element of who is being attacked-if you have a green hero on your team, they will not get extra damage from a slash from a red hero. The only time element matters with a slash attack is if one of your heroes has an elemental defence down ailment applied to them and receives a slash attack from a hero of that element.

thx, so though normal attacks from opponent do not consider element advantages, they are affected by element defense up/down.
Another question is how is element defense states stack with normal defense states. Do they stack additively or multiplicatively?
For example, +20% def stack with +40% ice defense, when they were hit by an Ice Hero, the def should be +60% or +68% (=120%*140%-100%) in total?
