I have the music box unchecked in options, but when I watch an ad, the music blares back on. Even if I click on the sound icon to turn it off during the ad, it will.play again when I watch the next ad. I need a way to turn off all game sounds, including ads, permanently.

The only way to do that is to turn off media sound on your device. The game doesnt have control over ad volume.
This is on android, not sure if iOS has the same volume options:

On my phone (iOS 8) I can use the buttons on the left side of the screen to turn the volume up and down. I never hear ads (unless they are cute, and I want to!)
