I am going to ask if OP has ever watched when playing in the map. The symbols that pop up on your heroes are buffs or ailments. You should know what your own heroes have done.

Likewise, there will be symbols on your opponents. Your heroes may have inflicted an ailment. If you are learning at this level, understand you may hold your finger over any hero to see what is up with them.
