Given my roster, who would you start on defense?
I’ve been struggling to find a solid tank. I have Kunchen and Vivica leveling, but my current lineup is Zeline, Kage, Marj, Onatel, and Missandra.
What is the reason you are putting Missy in the left wing and Kage in the right?
The reason is that Misandra would help the team to charge and fire in the same round and that even if Kageburado would attack someone under 50% hp it could still kill him due to Zimkitha’s attack buff.

I’m holding off on ascending Onatel and Zim in hopes of a future Guin or GM, you think those two can hold their own at 3-70? Onatel especially
No tanks can hold their ground at higher raid tiers when unleveled 
If you’re not short on ascension materials I would suggest you do level them, you could have to wait a lot to draw Guinevere and Gravemaker but the heroes you have right now could help your alliance to win wars and get the materials (for everyone) faster.

Yes, don’t hesitate to ascend whoever it is.
Better now then never.
Neither mats will help when kept in your inventory nor waiting for not yet pulled heroes.
If there will be a decision whom to ascend, take the most used one.
One can’t use a hero sitting in the summon gate
