The way I do it is input two asterisks before and after the word. No spaces. Note a single asterisk is for italics. That is why sometimes you see italicized text when people talk about 5* heroes.

H - Hamilton, second most populous city next to Auckland in the North Island. Our longest river, the Waikato river, seen in the pic below, runs through it.

Picton… good base to explore Marlborough Sound
(By the way, from across the ditch but have visited NZ a number of times… closer (and cheaper) than going to Perth from Sydney)
