I turned on the game and immediately this appeared:
I did not do any summons prior to receiving it.
I have done one 10 summon of costumes 23 hours before that, but did not pick up the chest, is that chest being picked automatically somehow?
Is that an intended mechanism (so that the chests cannot be saved for the next event)?
Yup that’s exactly it 
Unclaimed summons portal chests are automatically collected when the portal ends and you log in next.
Yes, it’s that costume summons bonus chest that you didn’t pick has been automatically credited to your account.
It’s happened to me a couple of times.
